What is a gear?
  • A gear is a wheel and axle that has teeth along the wheel. Often they are used in combination with one another and change the direction of forces.  The size of the gear determines the speed at which it rotates. Gears are often used in machines to increase force or speed.

What are some examples of machines that use gears?
  • Cars, bicycles, winches, etc.
  • Can you think of other machines that use gears?
