What is a lever? What does it do?
- A lever is the combination of a bar laying atop a fixed object (fulcrum). It is used to lift or move other objects (loads) from one place or height to another. There are 3 different classifications of levers.
What is a fulcrum?
- The object upon which the bar or sits on. Its position effects the area where and amount of effort needed to create a force to lift a load. See the 3 classes of levers for more information.
What are some real life examples?
- There are 3 different types of levers, so to avoid confusion please refer class 1, class 2, or class 3 levers to learn more.
- Click on the following link for pictures of machines using levers: http://www.mikids.com/SMachinesLevers.htm *these photos do not show the differences in lever classes

Watch the videos above. Feel free to pause and rewind if the video moves to quickly (especially video 3 which is not narrated). Pay attention to the key words (listed above). Answer the following questions in your KidBlog.
- How does the position of the fulcrum or size of the lever effect the effort needed to produce a force needed to lift a load?
- Can you label the fulcrum, load, and effort on a lever?
- Refer to the pictures of levers in the link above. Organize these by the class of lever they fit within
- Review the 3 classes of levers (see buttons above) and be prepared to sort real life examples of these using a Venn Diagram tomorrow.
- Comment on at least 2 of your peers' blog posts made this week.
- Be sure you know everything you can about levers because tomorrow you will all get the chance to try and lift Mr. Tuck!
